SInce February 2020, MicraMusic has delivered Online Instrumental Music lessons and developed initiatives to support learners. The Band Boot Camp series in June and July enabled us to return to ‘face-to-face’ instruction with a themed Band Camp that met both musical and band community goals.

The forthcoming school year will present many challenges, however, the importance of music and the impact it has on children’s lives has not changed. Rather, we will adapt, be flexible and will continue to offer convenient and quality Instrumental Music Education.

Music learning creates opportunities to learn skills necessary for being successful later in life. Creative problem solving, self-expression and personal management skills are developed and enriched alongside the learning of the musical skills of learning an instrument and playing in a band.

Our goal is to make music in a safe environment, and to give young musicians the confidence, skills, and enjoyment of being in Band.

The following studies have recently been completed since the COVID-19 outbreak with regards to measuring aerosols and wind movement while playing a musical instrument:

● A recent study hosted by the Vienna Philharmonic revealed “when playing an instrument they (the musicians) faced no additional risk of transmitting the novel coronavirus when performing” and that “we should not expect air exhaled by artists to reach more than 80 centimeters distance”

Even before the Covid situation, MicraMusic had adopted sanitation and hygiene awareness that was embedded into class routines and program aims.
甚至在新冠病毒疫情之前,MicraMusic就已經將衛生意識融入課堂慣例和學習計畫中。具體衛生要求如下:
Students are expected to bring their loaned instrument and music book to each session. Students will return the instrument at the end of the rotation, and will have their ‘new’ instrument at the start of the next instrument rotation.
每堂課學生都要帶上借來的樂器和音樂書。學生應在輪換結束時歸還樂器,並在下一輪樂器輪換開始就獲得新的樂器。
The rules are that sharing of instruments is not permitted in the class or home. Students are given advice on how to clean and care for the part of the instrument mouthpiece too.
規則是課堂上或家裡任何樂器都不允許共同使用。另外,學生得到如何清潔和保養樂器吹口部分的指導。
Although carefully sourced and acquired for their robust attributes, the instruments should be handled with care.
雖然這些樂器都是按照穩定和耐用的性能被精心選擇並購買的,但仍應該小心保養。
Dream it.
Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.
Build it.
Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.

We aim to support students to become proactive participants in maintaining healthy and safe environments.

Students must not attend Band classes if they have a fever or are unwell.
學生發燒或身體不適,需停止上樂團課程。
Sanitisation liquid is used on hands when entering and exiting the Band room.
進樂團教室時,必須使用免洗手消毒液。
Using masks when entering and moving about the room. Masks must be worn when outside the designated student space (island).
進教室及在教室內移動時學生應佩戴口罩。在特定的學生空間(學生島)之外必須佩戴口罩。
Sterisol spray is provided for each student. Alcohol swabs, tissues, paper towels are readily available.
為每個學生配備STERISOL消毒噴霧劑。酒精棉簽、紙巾、濕紙巾一應俱全。
Students use a washable cloth for collecting condensation or moisture from their instruments during the lessons. The cloth is washed in hot water and suitable disinfectant.
上課時學生用一塊可水洗棉布去擦拭樂器上收集的冷凝水或濕氣。這些棉布是用熱水和適當消毒劑及時洗滌的。
Students are also not allowed to share any musical items, including oils, and also should use their own pencil, music (one stand each student) and avoid any physical contact with the teacher or students.
學生不允許共享任何音樂課上使用的物品,包括保養油;另外,學生應使用自己的鉛筆、音樂書(每個學生一個樂譜架),並避免與老師或其他學生發生身體接觸。

The EBD gives guidelines for the Social Distance aspect of COvid management in Hong Kong Schools. To keep ‘distant’ does require some innovative practices to reinforce the space distances for students. In our recent Band Camps, ‘islands’ of 1.8m square were given for each student to use. Masks must be worn when off their island.
香港教育局提供有關社會距離方面的指引,作為香港學校應對新型冠狀病毒疫情措施的一部分。為了保持社會距離,確實需要一些創新的做法來加强學生之間的距離。在我們最近的樂團夏令營中,每個學生都有1.8平方米的私人空間,叫做“小島”。離開小島時必須戴口罩。
Inventive themes, like the Army Boot Camp theme, can unobtrusively create walkways, barriers, and spaces for students’ individual areas, that are appropriately distanced, but still make students feel part of a larger group.

Floor markings, like tape and engaging posters help students meet the distance rules, and also clearly establish the expectations.

Several disinfectants can be used for killing the coronavirus in the average home. However some can’t be used with musical instruments because those chemicals could harm them. For instance, any bleach or alcohol will harm wood instruments and could severely damage the lacquer on brass instruments.

Professional cleaning is almost always the best solution because the Ultrasonic cleaning systems are in place and also can perform an annual cleanse routine and disinfect during the summer break.

MicraMusic maintains a collection of musical instruments for rental and use by enrolled students in the Band Basics, Beginner Band and Rising Band at the Upper Primary at HKIS.

The health and safety of everyone using school instruments is our priority. The possible transmission of communicable diseases is an ongoing concern.

To reduce the possibility of infection, each instrument in the school’s collection receives a thorough inspection and cleaning process at the conclusion of the academic year.
